Brief Introduction

According to The Department of Climate Change, Energy, The Environment and Water, Australia wastes 7.6 million tonnes of food each year. This is obviously a huge issue, but there are bigger culprits at hand then the average consumer.

Companies such as Baker’s Delight contribute to this problem, and while baker’s claims to donate all of the leftovers from the day, as someone who worked there, I can verify that’s not the case.

Large scale restaurants also have this problem as people pay large amounts of money to leave unfinished plates to the bins in the back room.

Story topic proposal

  • Ethics of wasted food within the food industry.
  • The way expensive restaurants contribute to food wastage in Australia

Angle

I plan to write a feature article detailing the facts about food wastage in Australia, along with my own personal experience clearing out these spaces. I hope to show the readers inside the Australian food industry and the part we all can all play.

This story will focus on how much food is being wasted by these companies and how easy it is to fix. By using some of my own personal experience I am hoping I will be able to give the reader a new perspective on the matter.

Target publications

For my target user group, I am aiming for a younger reading demographic. By aiming my article at a readership under the age of 50, I am hoping that they are able to relate to the stories within the article about working in hospitality and begin to understand the part they play in not only the wastage of food but how they can prevent it.

The online publication I am considering is The Conversations this site draws in a readership under the age of 50. The Conversation is the main target as they cover stories that are news related and focus topical issues. My article topic is a massive issue that Australia is currently facing, The Conversation is known to write articles that are accessible to reader at a high school level. By making them aware hopefully many would want to learn how they can help.

Ronni Kahn – head of Oz Harvest

My plan for an interviewee, is to speck to Ronni Kahn, who is the head of Oz Harvest, the leading Food rescue organisations in Australia. Oz harvest travels to different businesses, such as Bakers delight, and private homes, collecting the leftover food from the end of the day.

Alternatively, as connecting with Kahn directly seems to be difficult, the contact page on her website simply gives you the option to write in, I am able to speak with her assistant Marla Minow or the Oz Harvest media team and another option for an interview.

Multimedia

  • Addin YouTube videos to break up information.
  • Have photos showing how much food is wasted.
  • Insert links to websites and organisations that are making changes.
