The publication I will write is a feature article titled “Rapid extinction of species: Australian ecology is encountering extensive challenges” which talks about species extinction in Australia. Parliament of Australia mentioned that the decline of native terrestrial predators may have caused a decrease of many ecosystem functions mediated by those species like fire regimes controlling, plants regrowing and soil erosion avoidance. This will badly affect our life and future, and that makes species extinction in Australia newsworthy. The article will be published on The Guardian because it is mainly targeting 15-to-44-year-old people that commit to the fairness of the society and prioritise outstanding journalism. The seriousness of the species extinction in Australia will get highly noticed soon if I publish my article there.
An article on The Guardian gives me the inspiration to write the story. It is about the increasing seriousness of species extinction in Australia and how it did not get enough attention in the federal election this year. Also, a research mentioned that the EPBC Act List of Threatened Species has risen to 2138, reflecting a 52% rise from 2000. In 2024, 41 species had been included into this list, a decrease from the unprecedented 130 included in 2023, while still exceeding the typical annual acquisition for 25 species. Furthermore, 14 species have been elevated to a more severe level of threat of extinction. Taking the opportunity of this year’s federal election, I will urge the government to pay attention to the species extinction in Australia. The Guardian’s article mentioned that Australian people value the environment a lot, and it is possible for my article to attract Australian government’s attention.

My article will contain three parts. The first part will tell the rapid speed of species extinction in Australia. Then, the serious consequences of this crisis will be explained. Things that Australian government should do to avoid this crisis from getting worse will be listed lastly. Along with the appealing words, I will use attractive multimedia, hypertext and interactivity to attract the audience.
Aside of publishing the article on The Guardian, I will also publish a video on YouTube explaining the same idea with the article. Then, I will repost the video on X and write a brief introduction for it. Regarding to hypertext, the data of Australian National University’s reasearch which I mentioned before will be attacted in my article to increase its reliability. Moreover, I will insert a heat map in my article where the pictures of some endangered species in Australia overlayed with the EPBC Act List of Threatened Species data are included. The colour intensity will indicate the level of endangerment of these species —— lighter colours signify a greater level of endangerment while deeper colours denote a lesser level of endangerment.

To wrap up, species extinction will bring many serious consequences to Australia, and that drives me to write a persuasive and attractive article to appeal Australian government to protect the country’s environment.
