The article will highlight the following key points:

Firstly, hosts Australia and New Zealand call on FIFA to reject the Saudi Arabian Tourism Board as one of the sponsors of the Women’s World Cup.

Secondly, FIFA yet to comment publicly on the reported agreement.

The controversies behind this event:

The Saudi authorities can still arrest peaceful dissidents, public intellectuals and human rights activists and sentence them to decades in prison for posting on social media. And according to the 2023 Human Rights Watch report, husbands can refuse to give their consent for a woman to pursue higher education abroad. Women were prohibited from working in certain professions and could not drive until 2018.

Women were not allowed to attend football matches until 2017, and the women’s national team played its first match in February 2022.

Saudi Arabia has slowly entered the global sporting arena over the past decade, with Cristiano Ronaldo joining Saudi club Al Nasser for two and a half years in a deal estimated to be worth more than $308 billion. The Middle Eastern country also has ambitions to become host to the Men’s World Cup in 2030 and even the Asian Cup in 2027.

New Zealand and Australia are countries that value human rights, and with the upcoming tournament being a women’s football tournament, this human rights issue in Saudi Arabia was a big conflict and FIFA didn’t discuss it with the hosts at the beginning.

  1. Nice reading! I think the topic is very interesting and absolutely newsworthy now that we are closing in on the World Cup that is being held in the country. Your choice of persons to interview sounds good and I think there are a lot of athletes and soccer lovers that have high opinions about this matter, so finding them should not be a problem. What could be more clear in your proposal is the “conflict” or what your specific story has as an angle. Since Saudi won’t be sponsoring the event anymore one aspect of the story is “done”, so maybe find out more about what happened behind closed doors or why Saudi can’t sponsor such an event happening in Australia. But the overall topic is super!
As a target publication, I think there is a lot of more interesting sites and newspaper that would be interesting in covering such an important topic.

  2. Hi Xin Li, your proposal is very well structured and it seems like you have a really good grasp on the situation of 2023 Women’s World Coprosterol so far. Well done!
I am not a football person. I am glad that your news has broadened my knowledge. The topic of female rights plus football is very interesting and meaningful. So I’m looking forward to your final work.
I have three recommendations that I hope could help your future writings.
1: I saw the links about background information at the end of your blog, but if you attach the hyperlinks within the beginning description, I think it will give readers a more comfortable and efficient reading experience.
2: I read your background researches, which is good. But I regard you can provide more information to make the story more in-depth and engaging. Like the history of the Saudi Arabian women’s soccer team; looking for real stories behind them to make the news more humanistic and touching; you can add short videos or pictures of their highlights in competition to make your news more attractive.
3: I assume there are a lot of subjective descriptions in your news. Maybe You can consider adding some data and graphs to make the news more convincing.
Well, here are all my three tips for you, and finally good luck with your great story!
