ChatGPT is a “cheating artifact” that has caused panic in the education sector?

Story topic
As OpenAI’s ChatGPT was officially released in December last year, the resulting cheating problem has attracted widespread attention in the academic community. Teaching and school boards around the world are starting to think seriously, is artificial intelligence an advance in technology? Or become a tool for educational shortcuts?

According to Leonie Rowan, director of the Griffith Institute of Education, ChatGPT has great potential to help children from non-English language backgrounds or some refugee children. This will improve children from disadvantaged groups.

However, most educators and schools are rethinking this AI in order to stop students from using ChatGPT to cheat. According to Janelle Miles’ report on ABC News, “ChatGPT it’s been described as akin to students outsourcing their homework to robots.”

Meanwhile, WA public schools have banned students from using ChatGPT starting in 2023. WA Education Department Director General Lisa Rodgers said the site was blocked through the firewall. Although artificial intelligence brings advantages to technological progress, it seems to affect students’ independent development of thinking and problem-solving skills in the education field, thus creating dependence. While some industries are finding the technology helpful, the tool has left universities and schools across the world feeling anxious.

Educational researchers are concerned that Chat GPT is negatively affecting student learning and that its content is not secure and accurate enough, and students are prohibited from accessing Chat GPT’s website on public school networks and devices.

  1. A very good idea! Your proposal is well written and lays out the concept and perspective of the story effectively. Cheating using ChatGPT is a very hot topic right now and has had a big impact on academia and is a social issue well worth exploring. The way it is treated by different educators, why it has become a tool of fear in education, the impact on students, etc., are all newsworthy. In addition to this, the use of sources is appropriate and the choice of interviewers covers different perspectives and positions in a very convincing way.

  2. Your proposal is very comprehensive and timely, which well explains the panic caused by ChatGPT in the university in the past two months. The topic is clearly stated, and the videos and photos to be used are also clear. However, when adding hyperlinks, keyword quotation can be adopted, which may be more concise and comprehensive. And I might worry that this topic has gotten too much coverage to attract readers. Well done!

  4. Hi Jiapei Luo,

Firstly, this is a really good story pitch, it’s easy to read and follow along with your ideas and why you believe it’s a story that needs to be told. I agree with you that ChatGPT is a newsworthy topic due to the fact that it is very relevant and timely in society today, particularly in academia and schools. However, in saying that I know there has been a lot of already existing coverage surrounding ChatGPT and why, or why it shouldn’t be banned, so I wonder how you could angle your story to be a bit different and gather the attention of the reader. The use of hyperlinks and media looks good, can’t wait to read the full story!
